Background information on geological processes

Background information on geological processes and plate tectonics is described well in the USGS publication "The Dynamic Earth".

Other geological information and descriptions are available through the following web sites:

  • United States Geological Survey: Earthquake Hazards Program
  • United States Geological Survey: Map of Major Tectonic Plates of the World
  • United States Geological Survey: Plate Tectonics Animations
  • United States Geological Survey: Geology
  • The PALEOMAP Project

Deep seismic profiling

Many deep seismic profiling programs have been conducted world wide. Many have incorporated deep seismic reflection profiling with wide-angle seismic profiling, tomographic methods, and magnetotelluric surveys to provide multidisciplinary data sets.

Seismic imaging programs

  • LITHOPROBE – Canada's national multidisciplinary geoscience project
  • DEKORP (Deutsches Kontinentales Reflexionsseismisches Programm), - the German continental reflection seismic program
  • Cornell University, Institute for the Study of the Continents (INSTOC), Consortium for Continental Reflection Profiling (COCORP)
  • British Institutions Reflection Profiling Syndicate (BIRPS)
  • Australian National Seismic Imaging Resource (ANSIR)
